The Interdependence of Science and Business

From new drug therapies and energy production to computer chip technology science has laid the basis for many of the world’s biggest technological breakthroughs. However, while innovation is what drives the field of science, business is all about making profit and keeping shareholders happy. Traditionally the two fields of business and science have been thought of as separate http://scorbe.de/preserve-confidentiality-the-data-room-info-for-selling-companies/ entities. However, the two are inextricably linked, and it is impossible to separate the impact of scientific research from its business implications.

While business is concerned with profit, the long-term consequences of their decisions could have significant social, environmental economic, and environmental impacts. Science is concerned about the repercussions of its decisions, especially its decisions regarding the exploitation of resources and sustainable development. A smart company will, for instance exploit a resource at the level that scientists consider sustainable. However, greedy companies have led to over-exploitation natural resources and ecological disaster.

We have categorized the different ways corporations try to influence science at the macro as well as meso-levels, and mapped the intended outcomes and effects of these strategies (TL conducted the initial coding, AG second-coded 20 per percent of papers). We found that corporations employ five macro-level strategies to reduce the credibility of negative research findings and increase the credibility of favorable research findings. These strategies are enacted by meso strategies that in time, can skew the evidence base to the favor of industry. This has three indirect effects: to cast doubt on the harms that could be caused by industry products and practices; to promote policies that are in favour of industry; and to boost the consumption, sales, and use of industry products.
